Later, Nika returned to the dark web, thinking she would lurk some more, see if Katerina showed up. She didn’t have to lurk long. There were murmurings out there, threaded through chatrooms, about General Vladimir Zhukov, a high-ranking official in the Russian Army. It was a hint about his record keeping as it related to covert operations; a suggestion that not all appeared as it should be. She tried to track the origin of the rumour, but whoever started it was clever, sneaky. It seemed like too much of a coincidence, Katerina’s appearance and then this hint.
She looked up from the monitor as Finn entered the office, the set to his face telling her he had not yet forgiven her for her earlier behaviour. He closed and bolted the door, then rounded her desk, wordlessly picking her up and hauling her to the couch. He dropped her on it, then sat beside her, turning towards her. “Don’t interfere in my job.”
She stared across the room, at a picture of the two of them on a beach right after the wedding. The best time of her life. “Aleksei will kill you and you’re a fool if you think you can take him on.”
He matched her hard tone. “That discussion is something between me and Jackman, not you and him.”
She turned to him then, her eyes burning, her voice cracking. “He’ll send you anyway.”
Finn nodded. “My point exactly, Nika. He doesn’t give a fuck about us so why should we let him into our lives anymore than he already is?”
The tears spilled over. “But what can we do?”
He picked up her hand, rubbed the top of it. “We do what we need to do. We’re a team, baby. You and me. Jackman doesn’t factor into our lives. We put each other first.”
It was contradictory. “That’s what I was doing in his office. Putting you first.”
“No. You were disrespecting me. I don’t interfere with your job.”
Why couldn’t he see the logic? “My job won’t get me killed.”
He tilted his head at her, touched his hand to her hair as he looked over her head. “It almost did get you killed. I almost lost you because of your job.”
Nika felt defeated. She wasn’t going to win this fight, not with Finn, not with Mr. Jackman. “What are you going to do?”
“I’ll go find them. Not to kill them, but to bring them in.”
She shook her head as ice bloomed deep inside her. “Aleksei Lvovich doesn’t work that way. He doesn’t wait for you to explain why you’re there. He’ll kill you without asking.”
Finn drew his thumbs under her eyes, then kissed her cheeks, swallowed her tears. “I’ll find a way to get him to listen.”
Nika let loose a loud sob as he pulled her to him. She was more afraid than she’d ever been before in her life. More afraid than when Rusya Savisin had her. She didn’t want to lose her husband.
